GeekDump #14: 19 April 2011

It's been a short while since I last posted, and longer since the Geek Dumped. If you haven't been watching the news, the area I live in was slammed by tornadoes. Luckily, there was no damage, fatalities, or injuries to my neighborhood (though my ex-wife had a close call).
The post after the fold will have several images, so slow connections beware.

Lucky number 13... Maybe I should have done this on the 1st. Or I could have waited a few days until my birthday... <cough>.

Well to Hell, the Toledo War, supermoon, the straw millionaire legend (and a red peper clip), and being hanged, drawn, and quartered

Today, we look at a particularly vicious method of execution, the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system, the war between Michigan and Ohio, drilling a borehole all the way to hell, and trading from a simple common object to wealth.

Elephant crushing, pyroflatulence, lawn mower racing, some unusual place names, and the Impact of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami on the video game industry

With an eye to the recent disaster in Japan, we look at the effects it has had on that nation's massive video game industry, execution by elephant, lawnmower racing, and the lighting of farts. We also have a couple of follow-ups to examine.

Okay, I admit it: I've been slacking this week. Unexpectedly having duty and some busy days at work have sapped most of my energy, and I just haven't been coming across as much cool stuff to post this week. Check out a week's worth of Dumping after the fold.

  • If you liked Freddie Wong (mentioned in GD#2), then you'll probably enjoy Cardboard Warfare and Cardboard Warfare 1.5.
  • Have you seen the trailer for Dead Island? A Minecrafter made a spoof.
  • One of the oddities I picked up from Portal was a strange fascination with cake. Not cake in general, mind you, but I like seeing video game-themed cakes. Some fo them are so cool it makes me jealous that my beloved mother stuck to either plain white and chocolate mixes or bought them from the grocery store bakery. For example, this Angry Birds cake comes with a slingshot and little frosting birds to shoot. The fact that I'm not much a fan of the game (it's just a cartoony rip-off of good catapult games like Crush the Castle) doesn't make the cake less awesome.
  • While I'm not exactly a huge champion for indie games, I do have a sizable collection of links for flash games I can play at work (take that, stupid taxpayers!). One of my favorite sites is Armor Games, and especially the works of jmtb02 (This Is The Only Level, This Is The Only Level Too, Achievement Unlocked, Achievement Unlocked 2 all have an elephant as the main character). The latest, Elephant Quest is a type of RPG-shooter that is much larger and a lot of fun.
  • Wikipedia humor: WikiProject Antarctica Highways. If you didn't know, WikiProjects are collaborations of editors to improve articles within a certain scope, some more narrow than others.

  • Manufactoria: assembly-line puzzle game where you have to read, sort, and write programming for robots going through the line. It gets tough pretty quick, unless you have a knack for systems engineering.
  • Do you play Minecraft? If so, you'll probably enjoy this video.
  • Freddie Wong is a Youtube celebrity who posts videos (usually action videos) that he's edited and done stunts for himself. They are a lot of fun, and he maintains a second channel for the tutorials and behind the scenes stuff.
  • A Portal speed run. Whoa. I don't normally watch these, because then I get hyper-jealous, but I'm impressed.
  • This photo isn't so much geeky as it is just plain cool (unless you're a tactical geek).

GeekDump: new feature

Yet another result of what I felt was me raving without anyone listening, I've decided that my blog would be a great place to linkdump some of the cool videos, images, and links that I thought were funny or cool. Most likely, it's going to be heavily weighted toward video games, since that makes up the majority of my dorkiness sphere, but certainly not exclusive. If you're not interested in this kind of subject matter, since I figure that somebody interested in Wikipedia is more likely to be an intellectual geek (math, science, etc.) rather than a more mainstream geek (vidjagames, anime, comics, etc.), simply avoid the posts labelled thusly and you will be fine.

Super-sized Sunday: KGB assassination, the "steely-eyed missile man", some computer comedy, the BFG 9000, groups of birds, some odd lifeforms, human echolocation, and the Outer Space Treaty

Today, I have quite a number of entries... don't really know why, except that I wrote down some cool stuff I saw on the History and Discovery Channels this weekend, and wanted to share. We will look at the dragon tree, lyrebird, barreleye, Georgi Markov, John Aaron, some funny computer codes, the biggest weapon in the Doom series, collective nouns for birds, the Outer Space Treaty, and humans who use sonar.

A copycat!!!

If you are reading this, you're probably a geek like me. And if you are a geek, then you're probably familiar with Something Awful. Well, it turns out that they did something similar to what I do here... a writer compiled the best entries from a forum thread titled "The Least Essential Wikipedia Pages". Though I try not to be critical (and indeed, avoid negativity), they have highlighted some interesting articles.
